Principal's Message

We are a part of the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board and take great pride in our school community.

The staff at St. Mark School is committed to providing our students a safe, inclusive learning environment, with high expectations for academic achievement. We strive to ensure that our daily work exemplifies the teachings of Jesus Christ, which reflects Gospel values. It is our hope that through our example and teaching that our children will become lifelong learners, and responsible, caring members of our greater community.

Student success is fundamental in our partnership to live our school motto Pride in Faith, Self and Learning. Our approach of collaboration, Differentiated Instruction, evidence-based instruction, and community partnerships will help ensure success for all students.

The staff and students at St. Mark School also use Restorative Practices. We have four community agreements among us:

- Attentive listening
- Appreciation/no put downs
- The right to pass
- Mutual Respect

Restorative approaches to conflict and incidents allow students to focus on working with each other to build and restore relationships. This is an approach of our progressive discipline policy with the intent to build a positive school climate.

Our school community maintains a close affiliation with Our Lady of the Assumption Church. It is through the leadership of the Pastoral team, Fr. David Reitzel, Pastor and Fr. Patras, Associate Priest, and Seminarian Peter Robinson, that our children are able to experience fully in the traditions of the church, and are always welcomed as valued members of our faith.

I am blessed to be working with such a kind, caring and dedicated staff and parent community. I look forward to our continued partnership between the school, home and parish, to help ensure that the school spirit and dynamic environment of St. Mark School will continue to flourish. May God bless us as we work together to meet our children’s needs.

Mrs. G. Cino

About Our School

The Official Ground Breaking Ceremony for the construction of St. Mark Catholic Elementary School took place on November 12, 1999. His Excellency, Bishop Anthony Tonnos, along with Chairperson, Mr. Patrick Daly, Director of Education, Mr. Marcel Castura, appointed Principal Mr. Corrado Ciapanna, and Trustee Mr. Raymond Bartolloti, had the honour of turning the first spade of soil on the road to the building of the newest Catholic Elementary School on Stoney Creek Mountain. The students from St. James School and St. Paul School who would be attending St. Mark School in September 2001, also took part in this memorable occasion.

St. Mark Elementary School opened its first days of classes in September of 2001 under the direction and leadership of the first Principal, Mr. Corrado Ciapanna ( 2001-2003). The Red and Gold Winged Lions embraced the motto of "Pride in Faith, Self and Learning" and quickly made their presence known within the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board Community. Three hundred and seventy-two students, and twenty-six staff members, became St. Mark Catholic Elementary School.

The actual school building was not completed until December 23, 2001. Thus the first days of our school history began within the walls of St. James Elementary School and St. Paul Elementary School. In January 2002, the Staff and Children began the new year in the new building of St. Mark Catholic Elementary School at 43 Whitedeer Rd. in Stoney Creek.

On Sunday May 26, 2002, Bishop Anthony Tonnos presided at the Blessing and Official Opening Ceremony of St. Mark Catholic Elementary School.

Each Student, Parent, Teacher and Staff member is called forth by God our Father to foster a growth in pride of:

~ Faith through the teachings of the Gospels of St Mark, as we all try to become Christ like in our ways of living
~ Self as followers of Christ and children of God
~ Learning to serve God and each other and in our academic development
